The Council provides employees with the skills and knowledge required to perform their jobs well, enabling each member of staff to play an active part in helping the Council achieve its corporate priorities. The Council also supports personal and professional development and aims to develop and nurture talent within the organisation.
East Staffordshire Borough Council has a well established process of performance management for employees, which includes regular appraisals. Any development and training that you require will be identified during your appraisal.
An annual programme of training courses is available to staff, encompassing a range of topics from first aid to management development. We also encourage the development of employee skills through secondment opportunities and project work.
Training and development opportunities include:
-
A comprehensive induction for all staff, ensuring that you quickly settle into your new role. This induction provides essential information about working for local government and ESBC, including its policies and structure.
-
Short courses tailored to your role, department or skill development.
-
Management and leadership development programmes for potential and current team leaders and managers. The Council has worked in partnership with the University of Birmingham since 2012 to deliver a Masters programme in Public Management to a number of employees.
-
Professional development.
-
The Council’s post-entry training scheme provides staff with the opportunity to study towards recognised qualifications that are relevant to their current or likely future roles, sponsored by the Council. Many of our employees have gained professional qualifications, degrees and post-graduate awards whilst working at the Council.
-
The Council also supports prospective and current employees to gain professional qualifications through the apprenticeship route, allowing them and supporting them to readily apply the knowledge, skills and behaviours from their course programmes to the their working activities. Many of our employees have embarked on or completed the apprenticeship journey (some have continued to move to higher level apprenticeship qualifications) and found the benefits of it. More information can be found on Apprentices.
